A Smaller Learning Community is a division within a large high school where small groups of students interact with an assigned leader, teachers, staff, and guidance counselor. SLC provide a caring and personalized learning environment in which all students master 21st Century skills, acquire universal values, connect to post-secondary and career opportunities, and become successful, contributing members of the global community.SLC are modeled after the 3 R's:
Rigor – A Rigorous, Challenging Curriculum
Relevance – Students learning how subjects/lessons apply in the business world. They learn the “why” and the “how.”
Relationships – Smaller learning communities allow for more nurturing student-teacher relationships.
The Smaller Learning Community is composed of a Freshman Academy and Career/Thematic Academies. The Freshman Academy program is focused on helping students make a smoother and more positive transition to high school. First-time ninth graders are separated from the rest of the school and taught by teams of teachers. Career/Thematic Academies are smaller learning communities in which a team of teachers serves a group of students and the focus is on a career/theme.
