Parent Involvement/Title 1

We are pleased to announce that Antioch High School will receive federal Title I funds this year that will enable us to provide additional learning opportunities for our students. Title 1 funding is based on the number of students on free and reduced lunch and is directly tied to the No Child Left Behind Act.

Parents’ Rights in Education – A Guide to the No Child Left Behind Act

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is an educational act that aims to:

· Raise accountability by carefully measuring school progress every year

· Provide more financial flexibility by allowing federal money to be used to meet school or school district needs

· Set goals for student improvement

· Improve teacher quality

· Provide School Choice if a school does not meet specific educational standards

· Make schools safer

NCLB Standards and School Choice Option:

Under NCLB, schools must prepare students to meet state standards on tests for reading and math. The test results, along with graduation rates determine if a school meets Adequate Yearly Progress. Each state determines the exact benchmarks for AYP.  Schools that do not make AYP must develop improvement plans and take other actions to meet AYP requirements.  If a school is not meeting specific criteria, you may be able to transfer your child to a different school. Through the annual state and district report cards, you can learn how well each school in our state is performing.  Visit  www.state.tn.us/education.

Testing Student Progress

Standards based tests are one way parents, teachers, and communities can see how students are doing in school. Testing can also help educators determine which students and schools need extra help. Your child’s individual test results are confidential– only you and your child’s school may see them.

· Please encourage your child to always do their best on all of their tests.

· Please avoid pulling your child out of school during standards based tests.

Highly Qualified Teachers

If your child attends a Title I school, you have the right to know if your child’s teacher is qualified and certified to teach a certain subject. If your child is taught for longer than four weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified, you will be sent a letter. You may also visit the state report card at www.state.tn.us/educationto get this information for Antioch.

Safe School Data

You have the right to transfer your child to a safer public school in your district if your child goes to a school that is identified as persistently dangerous by the Safe School Rating by the State. This information is listed as part of the State Report Card on Antioch High School. You may find this at www.state.tn.us/education. Antioch is currently listed as a safe school.

SES Tutoring

Your child is eligible for SES (Supplemental Educational Services) tutoring if he or she is on free and reduced lunch. SES tutoring is tutoring provided by outside agencies.
