STARS Nashville Mission Statement:
STARS Nashville works within our schools and communities to help all students overcome social and emotional barriers to learning.
STARS programs operate in Cheatham, Davidson, Humphreys, Marshall, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson, and Wilson Counties. In Davidson county we serve 27 sites and that includes middle and high schools.
We are also a part of the new Metro Student Attendance Center (M-SAC). STARS maintains an employee there who is the STARS Assessment and Outreach Coordinator for M-SAC. She refers all students who come through the center to the STARS Specialist at that student’s school. STARS Specialists in turn provide follow-up reports to M-SAC on how that student is doing on attendance, behavior, grades, and on accomplishing the goal they set for themselves when they enter the program.
This year STARS specialist’s primary focus in our schools are those students who are showing a propensity towards violence, alcohol and other drug use, gang activity, and truancy. We also work with principals and teachers to handle any crisis situation that is brought to our attention. Mediation is also a service that we provide quite frequently for students who are having disagreements.
Anti-Tobacco Classes are also held for students who have received a smoking citation at school and have been ordered by the Metro Juvenile Tobacco Court to take the class.
STARS Specialists are also responsible for our students involved in Teens Making A Change (TMAC), not to be confused with the MAC program. TMAC was organized in 2006 at the request of assistant superintendent of schools, Ralph Thompson. The primary focus was to listen to student’s and their ideas about how to create a peaceful environment within our schools and ways to foster better relationships between students and adults.
That original idea has grown into a very successful program in which school board members, community leaders, new teachers, and their peers are now listening to what TMAC members have to say. We are extremely proud of our TMAC members!
Here at Antioch our TMAC members are: Aaron Rooks, Bria Trice, Laquesha Wilson, and Jasmine Thomas.
STARS Referral Forms are located in the STARS mailbox in the mailroom and in an envelope outside my door.
