Our science department offers a wide range of scientific study: Biology (the study of living things); Chemistry (the study of matter and the changes it undergoes); Physics (the study of matter and energy and their relationship); and Physical Science which introduces the study of both chemistry and physics. Anatomy and Physiology, Ecology and Nutrition Science each offer a more in depth study of Biology and the Life Sciences. To earn a Honors Diploma students must take two advanced placements courses A.P. Chemistry and A.P. Biology. These A.P. courses provide advanced students with the opportunity to earn college credit at Antioch.
Students are required to take at least one physical science course, one biological science course and one additional science course. Two science courses require end-of-course tests. The Biology Gateway test and course are required of all students for graduation. The Physical Science course has an end-of-course assessment. Several course offerings are available to fulfill the additional credit requirement. For those that are on the Honors/Collegiate path and have a good math background, Chemistry is an excellent choice. Other students may choose between Ecology and Nutritional Science.
It is recommended that college bound students take a fourth credit in science. Studies have shown that students that take the additional science course score significantly higher on the ACT and SAT. Colleges require one of these tests for entrance and scholarship awards.
