Metro Nashville Community Education

Antioch High School

Metro Nashville Community Education is sponsored by Metro Schools and the Community Education Alliance, which is a department of the Metropolitan Government. Community education refers to the involvement of schools in the general process of community improvement. It is a way for people to improve their lives and their communities through learning and collaboration. Community education provides opportunities for community members, schools, businesses, and other organizations to become partners in addressing educational and community needs. We are able to do this through using the school facilities beyond the traditional school day for the purpose of providing academic, recreation, health, social service, and work-preparation programs for people of all ages.

Community Education has three basic components:

  • Education is a lifelong process
  • Everyone in the community (individuals, businesses, public and private agencies) has a stake in the mission of educating the people in the community.
  • Citizens have a right and a responsibility to be involved in deciding how the community’s educational resources should be used.

Community Education promotes:

  • Educational programs for learners of all ages, backgrounds, and needs.
  • Citizen involvement in community problem solving and decision making
  • Full use of school facilities
  • Partnerships between school and community agencies to address together the needs of the community.
