English - Language Arts

Antioch High School's motto "Academic Excellence and Personal Integrity" is the goal of the English department. Following the published Metro Nashville school system's standard for each grade level, the department works to prepare each child with the communication skills he/she will need for life after high school. These skills include comprehension of all kinds of reading materials, writing for all facets of life, the ability to research, an adequate vocabulary, and mastery of grammar and speaking skills.

Each grade level has six required "essential literature" novels. At the ninth grade level there is an emphasis for mastery of the English I End-of-Course test. Passing the English II Gateway test, required for graduation, is the focus of the tenth grade English class. English III stresses writing with a goal of competent or above on the TCAP Writing Assessment, administered at the eleventh grade level.

The English department has uniform policies and procedures to identify expectations and to assist with a smooth transition from grade level to grade level. Each parent and student is asked to sign the form and return to his/her teacher.
