AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a program designed for students in the academic middle who have the desire to graduate from high school and go to college. 

How It Works
     AVID students are enrolled in at least one of the high school's courses of rigor such as Honors or Advanced Placement.  The students then receive support in an academic elective class called AVID which is taught during the school day by a trained AVID teacher.

What do Students Do in AVID?
     Students learn WICR [Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Reading] methodologies for success in all subject areas.  Two days a week the students have tutors who help them with their classwork.  Two days a week students are taught study skills, leadership skills, test taking skills, organization skills, career opportunities, and time management as well as many other strategies for success in high school, college, careers, and life. On the fifth day of the week, students go on field trips to visit colleges and universities, have motivational speakers, and participate in community projects.  Students also receive assistance in completing college applications, searching for scholarships, and securing financial aid.

    -100% of MNPS AVID 2007 Seniors graduated from high school.
    -100% of MNPS AVID 2007 Seniors completed college entrance requirements.
    -98% of MNPS AVID 2007 Seniors applied to a 4 year college [2007].
    -92% of MNPS AVID 2007 Graduates are attending 2 or 4 year colleges.

    AVID is offered at all MNPS Comprehensive High Schools.
