Please obey the 15 mph speed limit in school zones. Children may be present in the area surrounding a school at any time, but are especially at peak times before and after school when the lights on the school zone signs are flashing.
Please obey the crossing guards in school zones. They are there to keep our children safe. If you do not stop for a crossing guard, it is the same as running a stop sign or red light—and carries the same penalty!
Please slow down and prepare to stop when following or approaching school buses. NEVER speed up to pass a bus while the warning lights are flashing or when the “stop arm” is extended—it means students are getting on or off the bus. Not only will you put children in danger, you can also get a ticket.
School buses are REQUIRED BY LAW to stop at all railroad crossings. They are also prohibited by law from turning right at stoplights. Please be patient when following a school bus in traffic. The laws are different for them!

Remember: all of these rules exist for one reason—to keep our children safe! If your route to work takes you through a school zone, or if you are often stopped by school buses loading children, please leave a few minutes early or adjust your own route to accommodate your schedule.
